The scene is ancient Greece, after a civil war between the two sons of Oedipus.  Both have died, leaving their uncle, Creon, to govern.  He decides that only one will be given proper buriel rites, leaving the other to rot on the hillside.  And, he has decreed that anyone who tries to administer rites shall be put to death.  Antigone, determined that her fallen brother will be given an honorable buriel, defies Creon, thus sealing her own fate.
