| Produced to great success in NewYork and London, Pride and Prejudice concentrates on Mrs. Bennet's determination to see her daughters advantageously married in a period (1796) when to be a wife was success, and to be anything else, failure. Jane and her Mr. Bingley and Lydia with Mr. Wickham are quite content with things as they are, but Elizabeth is rebellious and wants more from life. She actually refuses to marry Mr. Collins, whom she openly deplores, or Mr. Darcy, whom she secretly adores. The play is a duel between Elizabeth and her pride and Darcy and his prejudice.
