| Editor's Note: Eddy Seger, a teacher at Caesar Rodney High School, is the director of "The Night Thoreau Spent in Jail." |
| By Eddy Seger For the Dover Post Faxed from Edinburgh, Scotland,11:30 p.m. Monday, August 11, 1997 Our kids lit up the world stage tonight in Edinburgh and made us proud with an outstanding production of "The Night Thoreau Spent in Jail." Having just spent two days in London, seeing "Les Miserables" and a Swahili production of "Macbeth" at the Globe, touring Westminster Abbey, hurling pell-mell through the Tube to restaurants and museums, sailing down the Thames, trekking up the east coast of England by rail along the North Sea, enduring endless queues (lines, that is), racing through a two-hour "tech" (that's all they gave us on stage before the performance), it would have been easy to claim distraction and turn in a less-than-stellar effort. But the actors and crew of Caesar Rodney reached down deep and pulled out a winner. The Nadkarnys, visiting from the United States with relatives, pronounced the show a smashing success, all the while justifiably beaming at their son's fine work. Earlier in the day, we held our last rehearsal outside on the slope of Arthur's Seat -- a huge volcanic rock some 800-plus feet high which most of our troupe have already climbed (including 61-year-old Lottie Arthur). The fog rolled in from the Firth of Fourth, hiding all of Edinburgh and the peak, leaving us isolated in our own cloud -- much like the Brigadoon of our spring show. Talk about magic! We were in it! The kids were wonderful then as they have been the entire trip. They're eating well, brushing regularly (I'm sure), and are already old hands at counting out pences and quid, walking to the left and looking to the right crossing the street (no, Mother Perrington, we haven't lost Aubrey yet), and scurrying around Edinburgh and the Royal Mile like natives. Tomorrw we'll be in the Trossack region hiking the hills of heather. Ahead are three more "Thoreaus" (Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday), the Military Tattoo, a Ghost Walk, tons more shows, and many more friends and memories to make. They all wanted me to say "Thank you" for helping their dream to become a reality, for allowing them to be a part of this incredible world stage that is the Fringe in Edinburgh, Scotland. Thank you, one and all! |
